Bonner Zoologische Beiträge
, 46(1-4): p 249-260 Out of 4165 Apodemus specimens deposited in the mammal collection of the Natural History Museum in Vienna 144 specimens were determined as A. alpicola by correlating the sum of incisive depth and length of maxillary tooth row with the relative length of the diastema and by considering the relative tail length and coloration as well as pelage characters. The summer pelage of adult A. alpicola is denser and softer than in A. flavicollis and sylvaticus. A. alpicola is distributed in the Northern and Central Alps from Vorarlberg to Lower Austria (with one exception) north of the main chain. It is recorded here for Northern Tyrol, Salzburg and Lower Austria for the first time. Ecologically its distribution comprises mainly the montane (53 localities), but also the subalpine (14 localities) and submontane (3 localities) zone in altitudes between 550 and 1900 m above sea level. A varying combination of boulders and stones, water and open grassy areas is characteristic for its habitats. Duration of the breeding season seems to be similar to A. flavicollis: Young specimens start to reproduce in May, males cease to reproduce end of August/beginning of September. Litter size varies between 2-8 (embryos) or 10 (uterine scars). The average litter size of 22 pregnancies was 5.22. Maximum size of testes is the same as in A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus.
