A pair of Bearded Vultures (Gypaetus barbatus) was formed at the release site near Rauris, Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, Austria, in the summer of 1992. The two partners were Paradatsch (BG 106) and Nicola (BG 138), released in Rauris in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Paradatsch, three years older than Nicola, seemed to take the lead and started to build a nest on a Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) eyrie, showing intensive nest building behaviour. Nicola's interest increased in 1995. In 1996 nearly all the nest building was carried out by Paradatsch, while Nicola often flew around, broke bones or was absent for a longer period of time. All other aspects of pair behaviour suggested a pair living in good harmony and familiarity. In the winter 1996/97, however, Paradatsch disappeared and has never been recorded since. Possible reasons for the dissolving of the pair bond are discussed: The possibility of an accident cannot be eliminated; both members may have been females or Paradatsch's disappearance may result from poisoning as in the winter of 1996/97 a rather extensive, illegal poisoning campaign by hunters resulted in the death of a number of birds of prey, crows, foxes, martens, dogs and cats in Austria.
