Berichte des Naturwissenschaftlich-Medizinischen Vereins in Innsbruck
, 85: p 95-109 The oribatid mite fauna in the Glanzer Au, a periodically flooded riverine forest along the river Isel in Eastern Tyrol has been investigated. Litter samples (250 cm3) were taken in monthly intervals during the growing season of 1995 and complemented with samples of dead logs, lichens and moss. The material analysed consists of about 10.000 adult and 3.000 juvenile individuals belonging to 84 species and 37 families. Only a few species are dominant. The abundance of oribatid mites in the litter layer varies from 3.500 ind./m2 in April to 23.000 ind./m2 in May and August, with an annual mean of 11.000 ind./m2. Densities of up to 30.000 ind,/m2 are estimated in accumulations of litter up to a depth of 10 cm. The seasonal population changes with a peak in spring and another in late summer may be caused by vertical and horizontal migrations, mortality and the developmental biology of oribatid mites. High abundances correlate with periods of high precipitation and a high percentage of humus in the litter layer. The life cycle of Tectocepheus velatus in the field is analysed.
