, 37(2): p 71-77 In a 1.6 km 2 study plot around the alpine timber line of the Hohe Tauern Ridge (Austrian Central Alps) breeding densities of the Fieldfare (0.1 breeding pairs (BP)/10 ha), the Ring Ouzel (1.5 BP/10 ha) and the Mistle Thrush (0.2 0.3 BP/10 ha) were estimated. In contrast to other thrush species, the Ring Ouzel used areas of the alpin zone up to 2200 m above sea level as foraging sites also during the breeding season. After the breeding season the abundance of the Ring ouzel varied between 0.5 and 2.9 ind./10 ha. From July to August the density of this species was decreasing significantly. During September it increased again reaching the same level as in July. The density of the Mistle Thrush increased after the breeding season continually, but on a clearly lower density level. Fieldfares could only be observed in small numbers during September. In autumn berries form a very important part of the diet of the investigated thrush species. Changes in density and distribution patterns of thrushes after the breeding season seem to be primarily effected by the successively progressing pattern of the ripening of berries along the elevational gradient.
