, 43(1): p 1-19 The spatial activity and habitat use of nine Bearded Vultures released during the "International Project for the Reintroduction of the Bearded Vulture into the Alps" were investigated between 1988 and 1990 with the specific aim of quantifying the impact of changing breeding, rearing, nestling and releasing conditions during the first month after fledging. The possibility of an effect of previously released birds was also considered. One of the birds did not leave the release site and another was not observed. For the remaining birds there was a continuous increase in flight activity and habitat elements used. The young Bearded Vultures preferred steep south-facing, grass-covered slopes, with thermals and up-currents that provide them with good thermal conditions during the early stages of flying. There was a marked decrease in the diversity of ossuaries used by Bearded Vultures with increasing age and a concentration of birds on specific sites, which were used by several individuals. This behaviour was learned independently, which is certainly an encouraging development for the whole project.
