Berichte des Naturwissenschaftlich-Medizinischen Vereins in Innsbruck
, 82: p 121-144 The distribution of oribatid species from dry meadows in the Virgental, Central Alps, is analysed. Soil samples were taken in five dry meadow communities with different vegetation units (cushion and rosette plants, lichens, moss, herbs, and grass with roots). A total of 113 species were identified. Compared with studies in surrounding areas in Eastern Tyrol the species richness is high. The number of the species encountered represents more than half of the oribatid species known from Eastern Tyrol; 29 species are new records for Eastern Tyrol, one species (Peloribates longipilosus CZISZAR and JELEVA 1962) is a new record for Austria. The majority of the species are widely distributed. Three species (Passalozetes spp., Oribatella sp.) are new for science. The large portion of Southern European species is remarkable. Brachychochthonius hungaricus (BALOGH 1943) and B. immaculatus FORSSLUND 1942, new records for the Central Alps, are illustrated.
